Milwaukee Mandolin Orchestra Celebrates its 125th Anniversary!

125 YEARS OF MUSIC MAKING! Come celebrate the holiday season with the MMO, where you will hear music that spans our 125 years of music making! Featuring Milwaukee's chanteuse Robin Pluer, singing selections from the early 1900s and holiday favorites! The MMO will perform music that showcases our tantalizing sound, including Italian folk songs, Americana tunes, and classical favorites from Bizet’s Carmen Suite. We are also honored to feature a world premiere performance that highlights the MMO sound with a fresh contemporary feeling from local composer Josh Schmidt. It’s a wide-ranging program with mandolins, mandolas, mandocellos, bass, and guitars you’re sure to enjoy! Tickets are available at the door ($25) and online: Adults $20 | Students $15 (18 and under) About the MMO: Originally formed in 1900, the MMO (then Bonne Amie Musical Circle) is the oldest continuously operating mandolin orchestra in the United States. In the “mandolin craze” of the early 1900’s the MMO was one of hundreds of mandolin ensembles in Milwaukee alone. Rooted in musical traditions brought to the U.S. by Italian immigrants, the MMO’s repertoire has evolved over time to include ragtime, bluegrass, country, and folk music. Now, 125 years later, under the leadership of musical director Rene Izquierdo, professor of classical guitar at UW Milwaukee, the MMO continues to celebrate its Americana roots while exploring the sounds of other musical traditions, including European, Brazilian, Cuban, Japanese, and contemporary repertoire. In recent years we’ve represented Milwaukee in concerts performed with mandolin orchestras from Austria, Germany, Italy, and Japan.
