Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson), desperate to evade a loan shark, joins a spaceship crew flying off to colonize the planet Niflheim. But while his friend Timo scores a job as a shuttle pilot, Mickey is enlisted as an “Expendable,” a category of laborer considered disposable and given the worst and most dangerous tasks — because when he dies (and he does die, over and over again), he is cloned and brought back with restored memories implanted in a process called reprinting.
It probably doesn’t need to be said that things go bad. Confusion during a dangerous mission leads to Mickey 18 being created and reprinted while Mickey 17 is still alive. This triggers disastrous consequences for Mickey(s), the company, and most of the planet of Niflheim. From director Bong Joon Ho (Parasite, Snowpiercer), Mickey 17 is a fascinating and delightfully strange dystopian satire — and an Oops, All Pattinsons sci-fi goof-around at the same time.
