Jazz & R&B; Soul vocalist Melissa Kate gives tribute to the “Ivory Queen of
Soul” Teena Marie with a concert at The Caz on October 9th
Mary Brockert, popularly known as Teena Marie, the pop/soul icon dubbed; Lady T; and the Ivory Queen
of Soul, was a highly influential American singer, songwriter, musician, and producer. Her career included
successful albums, hit singles, duets with Rick James, and a groundbreaking legal battle against Motown that
resulted in the Brockert Initiative. Melissa Kate captures the passionate voice of Teena Marie in a recreation
of her songs, including the pop sensation “Lover Girl,” and hits from the 80s, such as “Square Biz,” and “It
Must be Magic.”
Melissa Kate’s exemplary vocal range, highlighted by the music and production talents of Van Taylor, enables
Melissa is to tell Teena’s story in a unique way. Melissa Kate is a powerful singer born in Troy, NY, who has
made Buffalo her home base. Melissa has toured with Taylor Made Jazz for the Department of Defense and
has been the featured vocalist for the George Scott Big Band at the Colored Musicians’ Club for two decades.
The show will feature hit songs from Teena Marie’s discography, along with a set led by Van Taylor, and a
guest appearance by comedian Jon Cesar. Dinners are available at 6:00. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased
