"Meditations for Post-Covid: Shakuhachi Music to Mend the Mind" will take place in Honolulu at Orvis Auditorium, University of Hawai’i Music Department. It’s been a long three years of limited opportunities to perform live music, and now as we finally emerge from the virus-imposed isolation, ever more worries and dangers seem to loom on the horizon. I find that in such uncertain times, immersing oneself in the experience of sound and music provides peace and relaxation. This “mind-mending” concert will feature traditional shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute) meditative music along with contemporary compositions. UH dance professor Peiling Kao will choreograph and dance to the shakuhachi composition "Byoh," by the Japanese composer Ryōhei Hirose, and UH composition department PhD candidate Ju Yi Chow will perform in the contemporary shakuhachi and cello piece, Shirabe and "Oki for Eastern Bamboo, Western Strings," by Akihiko Takeuchi. Christopher Yohmei Blasdel is a recognized master of the shakuhachi and has performed, lectured and taught around the world. He is presently an adjunct lecturer at the University of Hawaii.
