The Community Coalition for Social Justice invites you to join us to explore the theme of "Telling West Virginia's Stories and Dreams" during our Seventeenth Annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Day Celebration on Monday, January 16, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. Main Street Morgantown co-sponsors this family-friendly event, while the City of Morgantown provides financial support.
We are pleased this year to be working again with the West Virginia University Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) to provide this program via OLLI's Zoom and Facebook Live platforms. To use Zoom, you must pre-register! https://olliatwvu.wufoo.com/forms/z17w9uy41k7ccrd/to attend via Zoom. No registration is required to watch the presentation on Facebook. To view the presentation via Facebook Live, on the day of the event go to the OLLI page at https://www.facebook.com/olliatwvu, and the stream should appear at the top of the OLLI page.
Morgantown Mayor Jenny Selin will welcome everyone on behalf of the City. Our program will include music by Osage resident Al Anderson, Morgantown musician Chris Haddox, and the WVU Community Choir. The Morgantown/Kingwood Branch of the NAACP has invited Dr. Joseph Jones, WVU Reed College of Media visiting assistant professor, to speak on "Communities of Care: West Virginia and a Civic Identity for the 21st Century." Dr. Jones asks what it means to be a good citizen in our current age. Drawing on the often overlooked later works of Martin Luther King Jr., as well as West Virginia history, Dr. Jones shows how being a citizen means much more than voting. It also means being attentive to one another and collectively caring about the unique needs each of us requires. Appropriate for ages 3-103, this brief presentation seeks to forward conversations on what it means to live a quality life nourished by community.
To feature Monongalia County, Al Anderson, former Morgantown Mayor Charlene Marshall, and Sarah Little will be speaking with Jeremy Thomas about growing up in Osage. Jeremy will also read Counting on Katherine about NASA "Hidden Figure" and mathematician Katherine Johnson, who attended WVU and taught at Monongalia High School.
