The Return of the Western Monarch – combines science and art in an exhibition of documentary photographer Elizabeth Weber’s photographs of monarchs and the plants they need to survive. Monarchs are categorized as endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature due to habitat loss, overuse of pesticides and climate change.
Weber uses black and white photographic prints on white vellum paper and adds gold leaf to the images, suggesting the fragility of the monarchs, and a call to remember their plight as they near extinction.
Local community members working to protect the endangered butterfly provide educational materials curated by Audrey Fusco (Salmon Protection & Waterfront Network), Mia Monroe (Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation) and Ole Schell of West Marin Monarch Sanctuary.
