According to The New York Times, Makaya McCraven “has quietly become one of the best arguments for jazz’s vitality.” McCraven is a cutting-edge drummer, producer and sonic collagist who draws on hip-hop and other styles to push the boundaries of jazz and rhythm to create forms of his own. In this special large-scale presentation of In These Times, McCraven brings 12 of his closest collaborators to Skidmore to perform a collection of polytemporal compositions, inspired as much by broader cultural struggles as by his personal experience as a product of a multinational, working-class musician community. To experience In These Times live is to experience the evolution of the modern jazz tradition in real time.
Tickets are $30 in advance/ $35 day of for the general public and $15 for Skidmore community members (students, faculty, staff, and alumni.)
Join us at the Tang Teaching Museum & Art Gallery on Thursday, February 15 at 6pm for a discussion with the artist and a member of Skidmore faculty (free and open to the public).
