To Celebrate the SFCO’s New Beginning with Jory Fankuchen at the helm, we kick off our season with Handel’s Concerto Grosso. While the concerto grosso was a standard model for the time, Handel creates a fresh new take by incorporating the full range of his compositional styles, including trio sonatas, operatic arias, French overtures, Italian sinfonias, airs, fugues, themes and variations and a variety of dances. The world premiere of Shawn Okpebholo’s “Fractured Water” celebrates water as a precious resource by transforming it into a musical instrument. The piece brings awareness to pressing concerns about water pollution, conservation, and preservation. Despite the risks posed to vital waterways throughout the world, Fractured Water also brings hope. And to close out the concert, Beethoven’s delightful First Symphony hearkens to his predecessors, Haydn and Mozart, while without question displaying the beginning of Beethoven’s own style and character.
