Lunar New Year Concert

Join us to celebrate the Lunar New Year as we gather for an afternoon of music featuring Chinese wind instruments. All ages welcome! Tai-Chun Pan is a co-founder of the Greater Boston Chinese Cultural Association (GBCCA) Chinese Music Ensemble and the Youth Chinese Music Ensemble. He plays several Chinese wind instruments, including the Dizi, Xiao, Bawu, and Hulusi. Mr. Pan was the first prize winner in the Taipei Chinese Music Instrumental Competition (wind instrument division). During the upcoming performance, the following instruments will be played: Dizi: The Dizi is a transverse bamboo flute with finger holes and an additional hole covered with reed membrane to create a penetrating buzzy timbre. Xiao: The Xiao is a Chinese vertical end-blown flute made of bamboo. It has a low and soft timbre. Bawu: The Bawu is a free reed instrument that originated in the Yunnan province of southwest China. Although shaped like a flute, it has a pure, clarinet-like timbre. Hulusi: The Hulusi is a free reed wind instrument from China that is held vertically. It has three bamboo pipes that pass through a Calabash gourd wind chest; the center pipe has finger holes and the outer two are typically drone pipes.
