The pressure to develop ‘vacant’ lands along the Treasure Coast is the highest it has ever been. In actuality, undeveloped lands are not vacant – they teem with hundreds of species of native flora and fauna. Whenever these lands are converted into housing subdivisions, commercial and industrial projects, a bit of natural Florida disappears forever. In March 2020, a coalition of three conservation non-profit organizations (The Guardians of Martin County, The Treasured Lands Foundation and The Conservation Fund) came together as catalysts for a land conservation initiative in southeastern Martin County that has come to be known as the Loxa-Lucie Headwaters Initiative.
With the goal of linking the upstream reaches of the Loxahatchee River and the South Fork of the St. Lucie River, the Initiative seeks to bring undeveloped properties west of Hobe Sound into conservation, to permanently preserve a corridor for wildlife, plants and people, between Jonathan Dickinson State Park and the Atlantic Ridge Preserve State Park. This event presents the progress made so far and what you can do to keep this area green, forever!
