Love is the Way: Trinity Music with Theodicy Jazz Collective
Kick off Mardi Gras in style as Trinity Music presents Love is the Way, a vibrant concert featuring Theodicy Jazz Collective, one of North America’s premier liturgical jazz ensembles, in collaboration with the renowned Trinity Choir.
Formed at Oberlin Conservatory in 2006, Theodicy Jazz Collective blends jazz, gospel, and world rhythms into music that has been described as “a constant prayer—sometimes a shout of joy, sometimes a call to action, sometimes a cry for hope.” Their performances have resonated from from Los Angeles to London, Washington National Cathedral to Canterbury Cathedral, and Oxford to Yale.
On Saturday, March 1 at 7:00 pm, Theodicy and the acclaimed Trinity Choir will present Love is the Way: A Freedom Suite, an electrifying new work by band member William Z. Cleary. This nine-movement work for choir and jazz octet incorporates Black spirituals, American folk song, and new melodies – including a movement with lyrics by Portland poet Brandt Maina. Commissioned in honor of Michael Curry, former Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, Love is the Way was made possible by the South Arts Jazz Road Initiative, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Doris Duke Foundation, and the Mellon Foundation.
The celebration continues on Sunday, March 2, as Theodicy and the Trinity Choir offer their musical gifts at Trinity Cathedral’s weekly 10:00 service. All are welcome to both the concert and the service. Laissez les bons temps rouler!
