When the young United States government imposed the so-called “whiskey tax,” several farmers and distillers in western Pennsylvania exploded in a rebellion that was one of the first real tests of the government’s authority. To quell the rebellion brewing in western PA, George Washington amassed troops from a young US Army, beginning their campaign in Carlisle, PA.
