Lisa Keefauver discusses her new book with local author and friend of the store Steph Jagger. In Grief is a Sneaky Bitch, social worker and widow Keefauver offers a comprehensive and compassionate guide to navigating loss.
When social worker Lisa Keefauver became a widow she discovered how the misguided stories we consume about grief lead to unnecessary suffering. Responding to the problematic narratives that grief is something to move on from after completing the five-stages like some sort of to-do list, Keefauver became a grief activist. Navigating the messy reality of grief in a world obsessed with Top-10 lists and productivity can feel lonely and confusing. Through this book and her hit podcast of the same title, she creates a safe place to be inside the messiness of it all. Keefauver shares her personal and professional wisdom alongside the lessons she’s learned from clinicians, authors, poets, and friends. In place of rigid instructions and must-do checklists, Grief is a Sneaky Bitch invites reflections, encourages self-compassion, and explores the therapeutic power of humor with, yes, a bit of profanity.
Lisa Keefauver, MSW is a grief activist and the founder of Reimagining Grief. Lisa has more than two decades of professional experiences with grief and loss; working as a social worker, narrative therapist, and educator within multiple settings from non-profits to corporations and universities. Lisa's wisdom and understanding of grief is also embodied from her personal losses including the death of her husband in 2011. Lisa's grief advocacy has inspired her to create and host the top-rated podcast, Grief is a Sneaky Bitch; serve as an adjunct professor of Loss and Grief at the University of Texas at Austin; act as an organizational consultant to facilitate grief-smart organizations; write/appear as a thought leader across media platforms and as a keynote speaker. Watch her popular TEDx Talk, "Why Knowing More About Grief Can Make it Suck Less."
