Founded in 1946 by legendary choreographer José Limón, the company has long stood at the forefront of American modern dance. Over the past 79 years, it has graced some of the world’s most prestigious stages—including the White House, Lincoln Center, and international tours under the auspices of the U.S. State Department. The José Limón Dance Foundation, encompassing both Company and Institute, was awarded the 2008 National Medal of the Arts, the nation’s highest honor for artistic excellence. This special evening features a thoughtfully curated program of masterworks, highlighting the artistic legacy of José Limón and his mentor Doris Humphrey. Audiences will experience four landmark pieces: •The Moor’s Pavane (José Limón): A dramatic and tightly composed quartet based on Shakespeare’s Othello, this work is widely considered Limón’s signature masterpiece. Orfeo (José Limón): An emotionally resonant interpretation of the Orpheus myth. A Choreographic Offering (José Limón): A tribute to Doris Humphrey, constructed using motifs from her works and set to the music of J.S. Bach. • Two Ecstatic Themes (Doris Humphrey): A pioneering piece from one of modern dance’s founding figures, this work explores themes of duality and expression at the heart of early American modern dance. Maxine Sherman, RiverArts Producer & Artistic Director of Dance, reflects on the lasting power of Limón’s contributions: “There is no dance that dramatically tackles human emotions like José Limón. Using his own language of body weight and dynamics, and recovery and release, the Limón dance technique revolutionized the dance world in 1947. Now 77 years later, Limón Dance continues to speak to the complexities of human life, and his dances are even more relevant today. Limón’s repertory of dances captures our truth and spiritual essence, and highlights human gestures, emotional expression, physicality, and strength.” Today, the company is led by Dante Puleio (he/him), the sixth Artistic Director in its history and a former company member with over a decade of experience. Puleio brings a dynamic blend of deep institutional knowledge and fresh perspective to his role, honoring Limón’s vision while guiding the company forward into the 21st century. José Limón (1908–1972), born in Culiacán, Mexico and raised in California, began his dance career after moving to New York in 1928. His 74 original works are characterized by theatricality, musicality, and a deep sense of humanity. His choreography often addresses universal themes of struggle, identity, and community, transcending social boundaries to speak to the shared human experience. Doris Humphrey (1895–1958), one of the founders of American modern dance, was known for developing a movement vocabulary based on gravity and the use of weight—principles that shaped Limón’s artistic evolution. When she could no longer perform due to physical disability, she continued to make new work as Artistic Director for José Limón and created new dances for him and for The Juilliard School. RiverArts has been bringing professional dance to the Rivertowns for more than a decade, as part of its commitment to delivering world-class performances that enrich the lives of local residents.
