LEAP Into Science: The Mystery of the Monster Bug’s Shadow
Children intuitively know that there is a relationship between light and shadows, but they don’t fully comprehend it. In fact, shadows appear anytime an object (that you can’t see through) blocks light traveling from one place to another. We notice the shadow (the dark shape on the ground or wall) more than the light creating it. We also see that shadows appear similar but not identical to the objects creating them. These dark, mysterious objects make interesting subjects in many children’s books, but are often a source of fear and misunderstanding for young audiences. Alas, this hands-on exploration of light and shadows is sure to enlighten any group!
