Kidlit Q&A: Everything You Want to Know about Writing and Publishing Children’s Books
Got questions about writing a book for kids? This casual Q&A is designed for adults who are interested in the world of writing for children. Using an informal “Ask Us Anything” format, we will cover as much as possible from children’s book categories and genres to how to submit a finished manuscript to agents and editors. Come prepared with your questions and meet fellow aspiring children’s authors. You’ll leave with answers, publishing resources, and maybe a new writing buddy or two.
Sarah Mead writes for (585) Magazine and leads the Rochester Area Children’s Writers and Illustrators. She holds a Masters degree in writing curriculum but ultimately decided writing middle grade novels and picture books was much more fun! A former fourth grade teacher with a passion for literacy, she spends her time raising three young readers and leading an after-school writing club for kids.
Heather Lee writes middle grade novels and picture books. She loves to creep kids out and crack them up. She is an active member of RACWI and will be stepping into the role of co-director for the Rochester Children and Teen Book Festival next year. She was selected for Boyd’s Mills (formerly Highlights) Whole Novel Workshop in 2025 and 2026 and completed a picture book mentorship with Katherine Pew in Spring 2026. When not writing, she works as a nurse practitioner and spoils her cat with wild abandon.
