JewÂish Book Month traces its oriÂgins to FanÂny GoldÂstein’s 1920s creÂation of JewÂish Book Week. In 1927, JewÂish comÂmuÂniÂties across the counÂtry adoptÂed the week-long celÂeÂbraÂtion, timÂing the events to coinÂcide with Shavuot. In 1940, the event was shiftÂed to the month before Hanukkah, when it is still observed today.
ExciteÂment and enthuÂsiÂasm built for the numerÂous activÂiÂties planned across the counÂtry, and in 1943 JewÂish Book Week was extendÂed to JewÂish Book Month. One year latÂer, FanÂny GoldÂstein’s NationÂal ComÂmitÂtee for JewÂish Book Week was transÂformed into the JewÂish Book CounÂcil.
