This September, Traver Gallery presents solo exhibitions by two of America's most celebrated contemporary ceramic sculptors: Jeffry Mitchell and Tip Toland. Exhibiting together for the first time, their side-by-side exhibitions of new works explore how sculpture, storytelling, and figuration marry with historical notions of craft and clay to create rich and varied narratives that delve deeply into the human experience.
Mitchell, who describes himself as a "gay folk artist," rejects the irony and elitism often associated with the art world. Instead, he works from a philosophy of acceptance and constructs his art in vulnerable, profoundly human terms. Mitchell is primarily a ceramicist, but drawings and other works on paper are foundational to his artistic practice. His upcoming exhibition, Alligators, Elefants, & Alphabets, features new sculptural works in clay, neon, and wood, alongside drawings and etchings.
We hope you will join us on September 5th from 5 to 8 p.m. for the opening reception of this exhibition. The show will be on view through September 28th.
