Meanwhile, plans to build five open-pit mines in the Santa Rita mountains will -- according to the Canadian mining company Hudbay -- need 4.8 billion gallons of water a year to operate. The same plans also call for producing 128 million gallons of sulfuric acid that will be trucked out of the area every year.
