Jeanette Rankin: Political Trailblazer

Please join professor of history, Mark Sample, as he tells the fascinating story of one of America's most famous female leaders. In 1916, Jeanette Rankin became the first woman in U.S. history to be elected to the House of Representatives. She had been involved in the women's suffrage movement prior to that, and continued with it until the passage of the 19th Amendment. Rankin was also a pacifist who voted against the war. Re-elected in 1940, she voted against WWII also. She is the only person in U.S. history to vote against both world wars. In her late 80s, she also protested against the Vietnam conflict.
