Insect Expo Offers Hands-On Learning and Fun for All Ages
Backyard bugs, insect detectives, face painting, and more coming to Providence for “It’s a Bug’s World” Expo
Annapolis, MD; March 3, 2023—Insect scientists will swarm Providence this month for the 93rd Annual Meeting of the Eastern Branch of the Entomological Society of America, and they’ll also host a free public expo for kids and parents. “It’s a Bug’s World” will take place on Sunday, March 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Graduate Hotel Providence.
The 2023 “It’s a Bug’s World” Expo in Providence will feature interactive displays, demonstrations, and artwork, including:
• “Pollinator Power,” a collaboration of Rhode Island universities and Department of Environmental Management that will showcase a variety of insect pollinators and a photo booth.
• Roach Race 500! Cheer for team Hissing Cockroach or Team Dwarf Cockroach! While enjoying the fun, discover why these insects move so fast and why they have such a bad reputation.
• Fold your own insect origami.
• The Edna Lawrence Nature Lab at the Rhode Island School of design will exhibit samples of students’ artwork from outreach projects.
• Big Blue Bug Solutions “Nibbles Woodaway.”
• Gardening for Pollinators and Wildlife with the Audubon Society of Rhode Island.
• Mosquitoes! with the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management.
• Test your skills with the University of Rhode Island’s Tick Trivia, and meet “Fran” the Tick.
• Learn how to be on the lookout for the invasive spotted lanternfly, with the USDA Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service’s Plant Protection and Quarantine division.
Organizations and community members are invited to download and share the “It’s a Bug’s World” flyer to spread the word.
The Entomological Society of America’s Eastern Branch scientific meeting sessions will take place March 18-20 at the Graduate Hotel Providence. The three-day meeting will draw entomologists from northeastern and mid-Atlantic states and several Canadian provinces who will attend symposia on identifying and managing pest and invasive species, pollinator health and biodiversity, “casting a wider net” to make entomology for everyone, and several other topics. In addition, the meeting will feature submitted paper and poster presentations and student competitions.
