Imagine leaving home as a child and spending the next five years with total strangers in another country. Over thirteen hundred children between the ages of five and fifteen did just that during World War II and 156 of them stayed in the Rochester area. Dubbed the “Kodakids,” they were the children of employees at Kodak’s Harrow, England plant. Eighty-four years later, the story of 156 children rescued from the ravages of World War II still holds our interest.
Mary Jo Lanphear was the assistant records management officer for Ontario County for nineteen years. She has been the town of Brighton Historian since 1986. Her educational background includes a master’s degree in American History from SUNY Brockport and a bachelor’s degree in English from LeMoyne College. The Kodakids talk evolved from course work for her master’s degree.
