Irish History of Yonkers Walking Tour
This brand new walking tour will reveal the many ways in which the Irish have shaped the culture of Yonkers, from its earliest days, when a handful became tenant farmers under the Philipse family, to the Industrial Era, when large-scale building projects like the Old Croton Aqueduct and the Hudson River Railroad drew Irish here by the hundreds. We will visit institutions like St. Mary’s (now Immaculate Conception) Church, the first monumental Catholic Church in Westchester and St. Joseph’s Hospital, founded by the Sisters of Charity, and explore the many ways in which the Irish surmounted prejudice and discrimination to become one of the most successful and populous ethnic groups in the city.
