Presented by Natyashree Debjani Chatterjee on October 18th, 7:30 pm(PST)
This exhibition draws its title from the dual meaning of the word “saari” (or “saree”). ‘Saari Baat’ means ‘the whole story’. ‘Saari’ (or ‘saree’) also refers to an unstitched garment traditionally worn by South Asian women. Historically, it has been a gender-neutral clothing, and even today, it remains a drape for self-expression and identity, as well as fluid, non-binary clothing. The exhibition’s title draws our attention to the nuanced, intersectional narratives of primarily marginalized communities in which clothing is explored for liberatory practices to reclaim identity, resist oppressive norms, and create spaces for healing and transformations.
The exhibition features works by fourteen artists of diverse ethnic backgrounds and gender identities, whose practices span textiles, sculpture, multimedia, and wearable art. Through garments, accessories, and adornment, these artists tell stories of resilience and resistance that have long been erased from dominant narratives. Together, their works embody histories, preserve memories, and visualize possible futures.
A highlight of the exhibition is a collaborative community wearable project created with members of the San Ramon Valley, weaving local voices into the show. This project fosters a sense of belonging and collective identity, while also serving as a living archive of memory, imagination, and resistance.
The exhibition presents works that question traditional perspectives, inviting viewers to consider how art can reshape our understanding of both life and society. Each artist contributes a distinct voice, exploring culture, identity, and the human condition through a rich dialogue of form, color, and texture.
Promising to be an engaging and thought-provoking experience, this exhibition offers audiences the opportunity to encounter a wide spectrum of ideas and visions through contemporary art.
