Ignatius Hats Hat Block & Millinery Exhibit and Sale at Petersburg Area Art League

We are excited to tell you about our next exhibit, "Around the Block, Ignatius Hats, The Petersburg Years, 2003 - 2022," opening Friday, September 13, at Petersburg Area Art League in Old Towne Petersburg. The exhibit will feature a display of hundreds of "hat blocks," the most important tool of millinery and hat making, curated for display and purchase by gallery visitors from Ignatius Hats, the famed hat maker business in Petersburg. The hat blocks are all antique and vintage. Hat blocks are somewhat rare, as many hat makers destroyed (by burning) their hat blocks at the end of the season so their competitors could not get them and copy their design. Ignatius Hats operated in Petersburg from 2003 - 2022. All of the hat blocks and some of the millinery items on display will be for sale. Hat block making is an endangered craft, with the Heritage Crafts Association in the United Kingdom designating the art as "critically endangered" on their "Red List," with only two known hat block makers in that country. One of the remaining hat block makers, Guy Morse-Brown, has his new hat blocks listed on his web-site selling in the range of 250 - 350 British Pounds. The hat blocks used by Ignatius Hats make a unique and interesting home decor item. Ignatius Hats made hats for the following television, theatrical and movie work filmed in the Petersburg area and elsewhere: Iron Jawed Angels, 2003, HBO movie starring Hillary Swank and Angelica Huston John Adams, 2008 TV mini-series starring Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney (Emmy for Best Costumes) Sleepy Hollow, 2013-2017 TV series Killing Lincoln, 2013 TV movie, Best Costume nomination Emmys Killing Kennedy, 2013 TV movie starring Rob Lowe Turn, 2014 - 2017 AMC Series starring Jamie Bell Ithaca, 2015 movie directed by and starring Meg Ryan with Sam Shepard and Tom Hanks Glee, 2015 Fox TV series Mercy Street, 2016 PBS series Cinderella, 2019 Opera San Jose Good Lord Bird, 2020 Showtime TV mini-series starring Ethan Hawke The exhibit and sale runs through October 5th at PAAL, located at 7 E. Old Street in Petersburg. PAAL's hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM and 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM on Sunday. The gallery is closed on Mondays. Additional information on the art of hat making will also be on display. For our opening night, coinciding with Petersburg's "Friday for the Arts!," the gallery will be open from 5:00 PM - 9:00 PM.
