The Hummingbird Award in Literary Arts or also known as the “Premio Colibrí en Arte Literaria” is a biennial award (occuring in even years) honoring and recognizing a nationally prominent author, poet, or artist whose work has elevated and affirmed the voice of the Latinx community.
Morales became one of the most celebrated Latina creators of children’s literature, earning multiple Pura Belpré Medals and a Caldecott Honor for Viva Frida. Drawing on Mexican folklore, family stories, and her immigrant experience, she later wrote Dreamers, a bestselling memoir celebrating libraries, resilience, and belonging. Her work continues to highlight culture, identity, immigration, and the power of storytelling, inspiring readers through richly imaginative art and deeply personal narratives.
