Local sources of pollution in the Conodoguinet Creek Watershed have a direct impact on our community. These contaminants adversely affect the quality of our municipal and well-drinking water sources, locally caught fish and other aquatic life, wildlife, biodiversity, and recreational safety (fishing, swimming, and boating). This project aims to collect and analyze information from existing data, maps, historical accounts of legacy industry, land use and disposal, and potentially newly collected data to assess point and nonpoint sources of contamination and their possible impacts. Your active participation in community education, engagement, and action will be crucial throughout the project. A final report will include recommendations for immediate actions and suggestions for further monitoring, testing, and remediation.
Some things we will cover about the Conodoguinet Creek watershed:
What is a watershed, and How do you locate yours
How to identify known and potential pollution sources and their contaminant types
Potential impacts of chemical and physical toxicities on the environment, wildlife, and human health.
Hands-on mapping of some of the current toxicity levels in the watershed
Health risks associated with local fish consumption.
Contaminants to avoid in local fish.
