HOUSE OF TOLERANCE might be set in a 20th Century brothel, but it is not meant to titillate in the way one would expect. It’s a film that’s more interested in the working women and their day to day routines, their joy on a day off, their conversations between jobs. The film is set in the brothel’s final days, laying out these women’s plans and fears for their immediate future. It’s bizarrely erotic, dreamy yet biting, and at times sickeningly horrific.
Dizzyingly textured cinematography from Josée Deshaies (PASSAGES) not only makes HOUSE OF TOLERANCE a feast for the eyes, but it also has a seductive feminine gaze. A truly rapturous film about the malaise of women whose job it is to please men no matter the cost, HOUSE OF TOLERANCE is a monumental film from director Bertrand Bonello (THE BEAST, NOCTURAMA).
