Holy Week Meditation

On Holy Wednesday, March 27 at 7:00 p.m. at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 1956 Main Road, Tiverton, the students are part of a concert presentation of Hereford Variations written and performed by organist-composer Peter S. Berton. This set of fifteen short pieces takes listeners on a stirring 40-minute journey, narrated by the priest and poet Thomas Traherne (1636-1674) as imagined in modern stained glass windows of Hereford Cathedral, England (below). In the manner of Elgar’s Enigma Variations (which has been likened in structure to a Stations of the Cross), each variation also characterizes a person to whom it is dedicated. The audience, led by the students, sing the tune Hereford inspiring all fifteen. Played on the vintage Hook and Hastings organ of Holy Trinity Church, and on the stunning digital model of the Willis organ of Hereford Cathedral which has been set up with its own portable console specially for this concert. The surprising acoustic in this elegant uncarpeted, recently renovated space will generously assist the singing, and the view to the western sky from its entrance a fine way to start the meditation (sunset is just after 7 pm).
