Several past and present members of the Neo-Futurists theater company read from the books of Russell Hoban in a live lit format, in honor of what would have been Hoban's 100th birthday on the previous day. Hoban was the author of critically acclaimed novels for adults including Riddley Walker and Turtle Diary, as well as many classic children's books such as The Mouse and His Child, A Birthday for Frances, and The Marzipan Pig.
Performers will include Chicago Neo-Futurist alums Diana Slickman and Dave Awl, Eli Bishop of the San Francisco branch of the Neo-Futurists, and Dr. Graeme Wend-Walker of Texas State University, who will read from his forthcoming book about Hoban. The reading is part of #Hoban100, a slate of local and online events that are being organized by readers and scholars around the world to celebrate Russell Hoban's centenary throughout 2025. (More info about the Hoban100 celebration can be found by visiting RussellHoban.org.)
The show takes place in the upstairs room at the Hopleaf. Doors open at 7 pm, show starts at 7:30 pm, and afterwards there will be time for attendees to hang out and converse. Admission is "pay what you can" with a $7 suggested donation (free if you're broke) and a cash bar. 21 and over with ID.
