Historic Needlework Sampler Program

Historian Alexandra Lally Peters will lead a historic needlework sampler program at the Westport Museum, to share the history we were never taught—the story of the lives of girls and women as revealed through the needlework samplers they created. Featuring precise stitches, samplers have been made by women and girls for hundreds of years as both educational and decorative objects. Several museum collection samplers from the mid-19th century will be on display and discussed during the program. Alexandra Lally Peters is a sampler collector and historian who first encountered a schoolgirl sampler for sale forty years ago and was so startled to be holding history in her hands that she hasn’t stopped buying them since.
