Hinamatsuri (Japanese Girls' Day)
As is tradition, we will have a set of hina dolls on display. Hina dolls are a centuries-old tradition in Japan and have come to be seen as guardian dolls for young girls. A traditional display will feature fifteen dolls presented on a tiered stand meant to mimic the imperial court. Most important among the dolls are the emperor and empress dolls, which are displayed at the top.
During this event, visitors will be invited view a display of hina dolls, learn more about the traditions of Hinamatsuri, and participate in free hands-on activities. We encourage guests of all cultures to join us to learn more about this tradition! This event is part of the programming for Mountain of Gold: A History of East and Southeast Asian Cultures in El Paso del Norte, 1880s-1980s. Mountain of Gold highlights local Japanese families and their stories along the border.
