High Desert Retreat - Architecture Discussion and Monograph Signing

On Thursday, November 14th, architect Joshua Aidlin and photographer Adam Rouse will join writer and curator Zahid Sardar for a conversation about the High Desert Retreat. Located in California's Coachella Valley, the High Desert Retreat has been widely celebrated–the residence has been featured in Architectural Record, Interior Design, and Residential Design Magazine, and earned distinction with awards from the American Institute of Architects, AIA California, AIA San Francisco, the Society of American Registered Architects, the International Design Awards, the Architecture MasterPrize, and The Chicago Athenaeum Museum. Join us for a conversation about the evolution of the project, fostering a creative practice, and desert modernism. ABOUT THE SPEAKERS Joshua Aidlin, FAIA - Architect Joshua Aidlin, FAIA, leads a multidisciplinary studio—producing architecture, interiors, furniture, and sculptures—with a conviction that art and design are integral to vibrant public life. Joshua advances an architecture demonstrating environmental, cultural, psychological, and multisensorial sensitivity. A tireless public advocate for design, Joshua has served on the board of the SFMOMA Architecture & Design Forum; the AIASF Public Policy and Advocacy Committee; and the Fundraising Committee for Youth Art Exchange. Founded in 1997, his eponymic studio Aidlin Darling Design has garnered over 300 awards, including the Cooper-Hewitt, Smithsonian National Design Museum Award which recognized the firm's complete body of work for design excellence, innovation, and the enhancement of quality of life. Adam Rouse - Photographer Adam Rouse is an architecture and design photographer based in California. His work has been described as emotive and sensorial, capturing the intended mood of the architecture and design subjects. Adam’s photography has appeared in The New York Times, Artravel Magazine, Wallpaper*, Dwell, Architectural Record, Interior Design Magazine, and Residential Design. Through the eyes of a trained architect, Adam’s work explores the structure, light, and formal qualities of each space he documents. In an era in which architectural representation is rapidly shifting, Adam brings a unique perspective and way of knowing his photographic subjects. Zahid Sardar - Moderator, Architecture Writer & Curator Zahid Sardar is a San Francisco-based editor, writer, and curator specializing in architecture, interiors, and design. He is the author of many design books, including San Francisco Modern, West Coast Modern, and In & Out of Paris: Gardens of Secret Delights. His critical work appears in national and international publications including the New York Times and Dwell magazine. He has taught design history at the California College of the Arts. During his 22 year tenure as architecture and design editor for San Francisco Chronicle, he shaped the city’s design discourse. Zahid Sardar will soon launch a bold new design publication: SHLTR™. About the Project Sited on a rocky desert plateau overlooking the Coachella Valley and the San Jacinto Mountain Range beyond, the High Desert Retreat advances the tradition of desert modernism, and refines its architectural vocabulary for the 21st century. The sharp geometries and textural compositions of this widely-celebrated residence create a complementary tension between the house and the surrounding boulders and pinyon trees. About the Monograph The High Desert Retreat monograph is a meditation on the creative process that brought the titular residence to fruition. Featuring commentary from the architects, original drawings, and photography by Adam Rouse, the book walks the reader through Aidlin Darling’s design process, from conception to realization. Published by IMAGES, it reveals the firm’s attention to the qualities of each project site, and to designing for all the senses.
