HFC PRESENTS: FIRST TIMES ~ GAS FOOD LODGING
With a commitment to spotlighting women on the fringes of society, Allison Anders' filmography remains as prescient today as it was 30 years ago. In her solo debut, Gas Food Lodging, a mother and her two daughters navigate life in a desolate town with no way out. Fairuza Balk leads the film with the poise of a seasoned actress, despite being only 17 at the time. She’s supported by exceptional performances from Ione Skye and Brooke Adams, whose presence feels as rooted in the desert landscape as the towering saguaro cacti. Atmospheric and quietly romantic, Gas Food Lodging offers a raw and realistic portrayal of women simply trying to get by in the face of poverty.
