Heart Valve Disease Awareness Day is recognized on February 22 to raise awareness about heart valve disorders, which affect more than 11 million Americans and claim the lives of 25,000 each year.
Heart valves open and shut with each heartbeat to keep blood flowing in the right direction. Problems with heart valves can occur if the valves are leaky (a condition called regurgitation), too narrow (stenosis), or don’t have a proper opening.
Abrazo Arizona Heart Hospital is hosting a free Heart Valve Disease Awareness Day educational event from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22. Attendees can participate in cardiovascular risk screenings and meet with a clinician to review risk factors.
