Great Decisions: Global Famine

Fears of global food shortages have followed Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which has disrupted grain shipments from the major grain producer. But what about countries and regions that were suffering before this impending shortage? How is famine defined, and how is it different from simple food shortages? What, if any, remedies are there?  Join us for a discussion of the article "Famine: A Renewed Threat in the 21st Century?" by Daniel Maxwell, which can be found by clicking on the attached link or at Reston Library. We will be joined by Phil Thomas, an adjunct faculty member at George Mason University's Schar School of Policy and Government where he leads a Global Food Security Project addressing the causes and effects of global hunger and teaches a course on the national security implications of global food insecurity. A short film on the topic will be shown at 1:00, followed by a discussion at 1:30.
