Gravity presents Into the Dark, a new work instigated by Artistic Director Jess Curtis in collaboration with a diverse ensemble of Blind, Low Vision and Sighted performers, addressing the physical, subconscious, and literal effects of western culture’s binary mythologizing of darkness and light. Into the Dark was developed through the engagement of extra-visual access practices, such as self-description of actions by the performers through both language and sound elements of Blind Wayfinding techniques also informed the choreographies. With a cast of performers from Berlin and the Bay Area, Into the Dark runs for four shows in Berlin before coming to San Francisco.
According to Curtis, “For Into The Dark we have been exploring the cultural and phenomenological experiences of darkness and light, looking at the physical, subconscious and practical effects of the binary mobilization of darkness and light through Western thought in social and individual meaning-making.”
With this production, the artistic team continues its innovative exploration of the aesthetics of access practices from blind culture such as audio description, wayfinding, tactile floor markings and immersive seating arrangements to literally destabilize social modes of perception that unfairly and irrationally stratify light and darkness to devalue, disempower and disenfranchise individuals and communities.
The performers of Into the Dark are Gabriele Christian, Rachael Dichter, Clarissa Dyas, Gerald Pirner, Ka Rustler, and TiffanyTaylor , with music by Sam Hertz, and additional collaboration from Michiel Keuper, Aiano Nakagawa, Jessi Barber, Magda Garlinska, Stefan Trzeciok, and Getchen Blegen.
Into the Dark is accompanied by a photo exhibition of the blind photographer Gerald Pirner, presented at CounterPulse in collaboration with JessCurtis/Gravity and San Francisco Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
