Maya Cunningham is an Africanist/African Americanist ethnomusicologist and cultural activist specializing in African American cultural identity and traditional African and African American music. She will receive her PhD in African American studies with a focus on ethnomusicology from UMass Amherst in May 2025, having earned multiple master’s degrees in Afro-American Studies, ethnomusicology, and jazz performance, as well as a Bachelor of Music in jazz studies from Howard University. A recipient of the 2022 Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship and a 2017 Fulbright Fellow, Cunningham has presented her research globally. As a jazz vocalist, she draws inspiration from legends like Abbey Lincoln and Sarah Vaughan, showcasing her impressive five-octave range and emotional delivery in performances at notable venues such as Jazz at Lincoln Center. Additionally, she is an accomplished visual artist, integrating her music with her artistic creations in collage, monoprint, and fused glass.
