Graceful Movements, Rippling Peace - Celebration of Korean Classical Music and Dance
Korean culture has garnered worldwide attention in recent decades— through pop music, dramas, films, literature, and beloved dishes like Bibimbap. This fall, the Oasis Music Series turns to Korea’s classical roots, offering an exciting cross-cultural glimpse into its refined beauty and unalloyed zest.
A yearning for peaceful calm pervades many aspects of Korean tradition. It is no coincidence that Korea has long been called the “Land of the Morning Calm.” Yet, its long and often turbulent history has also taught its people that peace is never guaranteed. That same spirit lives on today, glowing once again in the candlelight that illuminated the square and drew global attention.
The performance opens with dynamically rhythmic percussion and dance pieces. It continues with the celebrated traditional dance called Taepyeongmu—Dance for Peace—which begins with graceful steps and elegant gestures, gradually building toward a brilliant, intricate climax. From there, the evening turns outward, as Cho & Lernis, followed by Jang & her fellow musicians, infuse classical traditions with the energy of the global modern pulse. The program then returns to the seasoned depth of Korean music heritage with a performance of Sanjo and Korean folk melodies by Kim on the traditional bowed string instrument, ajaeng.
History reminds us that even the faintly stirred candlelight of hope can ripple through a crowd and swell into a roaring tide. The performance closes with an ensemble rendition of “Beautiful Country.”
