Metro Detroit is home to a rich and diverse cultural fabric — and one vibrant community is celebrating a milestone that highlights just how deeply its roots now run through our region.
The Kerala Club of Detroit is turning 50.
This anniversary marks half a century since Malayalees from Kerala, India, began calling Detroit home. What started as a small group of immigrants has flourished into a thriving community that is now woven into the fabric of Detroit life.
Today, you’ll find Malayalees contributing to nearly every aspect of Detroit’s economy and culture from engineers at Ford, GM, and Stellantis, to physicians in our local hospitals, to entrepreneurs running grocery stores, caterers, and cultural organizations. You can even spot Kerala churches and temples across the metro area.
To mark this milestone, the Kerala Club is inviting all Detroiters to experience the richness of Kerala’s heritage at a special 50th anniversary celebration on June 21st, right here in Metro Detroit.
What makes it newsworthy for your viewers:
• A unique multicultural event featuring traditional Kerala cuisine, dance, music, clothing, and wellness practices like Ayurveda.
• A story of immigration and integration, showing how one community has contributed to Detroit’s growth over five decades.
• Vibrant visuals and sound: colorful performances, authentic food stalls, and cultural exhibitions make it perfect for both on-air and digital coverage.
• An opportunity to spotlight diversity in Detroit and celebrate the communities that make this city home.
