Set in the late 1800s, Hlynur Pálmason’s new film Godland follows a Danish priest trekking to remote Iceland, at the time a Danish territory, to establish a church. The priest, Lucas (Elliott Crosset Hove), also fancies himself a photographer and lugs a camera along to document his journey. Inevitably, Lucas learns just how unforgiving the people and landscape of remote Iceland can be. Early reviewers have accurately likened Godland to There Will Be Blood and the works of Werner Herzog, but this overlooks how stimulating on a sensory level the film often is—this is a movie you often feel like you can touch, smell, taste.
In Danish and Icelandic with English subtitles.
