Genesis Art Gallery host free Dia de Los Muertos event for familie

Genesis Gallery host international artist Carlos Lecanda for Dia de Los Muertos Nov. 7th as part of Young Curators series Lakewood, Co-Join Genesis Art Gallery for their 1st annual Dia de Los Muertos exhibition: Leyendas De Mis Abuelos, running Oct. 24-Nov. 21, 2025, for a free family-friendly opening reception on Friday, December 7, 2025, from 6 pm to 9pm. The show is part of the gallery’s Young Curator Series and features works from the collection of international Mexican Paper Mache artist Carlos Lecanda’s “ Las Catrinas”. Curator Bianca Dominguez was inspired by her experience as an undergraduate at MSU Denver in 2012 , where she was a member of the Journey Through Our Heritage team. Her team helped establish Dia de Los Muertos as a staple on campus. “ It was invigorating to be part of something so inspiring and to see my peers embrace the holiday” said Dominguez. “ I still recall how I was thrilled to see students create their own vision of Dia de Los Muertos.” After graduation Dominguez’s desire to help youth embrace the holiday never waned. “ I have always wanted to be able to highlight up and coming local talent and high school artist beyond the campus or the classroom . But the opportunity to show at galleries during this time is difficult.” explained Dominguez. “ The holiday has become so popular that local galleries are filled with work by many established artist and the opportunity for new artist to show is difficult. ” Genesis Gallery has created a new space for Dia de Los Muertos exhibitions dedicated to promoting young artist and community art. “ At first I was intimidated about doing an exhibition that featured unknown artist with so many established galleries featuring juried work. Then Carlos Lecanda offered to supplement our show with his work. It was not only an honor but a great vote of confidence in what our young artist have to offer to the spirit of the holiday.” Dominguez and Lecanda hope to drive home the message that this holiday is about community engagement on all levels. “ This show is about community engaging with the true essence of Dia de Los Muertos , where all people can come together to celebrate our culture.” The exhibition is sponsored by Lakewood United Methodist Church, MSU Denver Journey Through Our Heritage (JTOH), Chicano Humanities and Arts Council (CHAC), and the Colorado Folk Arts Council. This unique holiday showcase features over 15 young and emerging artists who honor the legends of their grandparents as well as the iconic works of Carlos Lecanda. The exhibition is free and open to the public. For more information visit https://shorturl.at/DgTJ4 or email [email protected] More Info
