Gayla Lemke: Las Casitas
“Las Casitas” is a body of work using the familiar form of the house as both a personal and a political symbol. Created during a time of housing insecurity, migration and diaspora, “Las Casitas” explores the changing ideas of community and what home represents to those who have access to it.
The houses each have an individual presence yet together form a varied and interconnected landscape, reflecting the diversity of life in our contemporary world.
The vibrant surface colors on the clay evoke personal histories as well as cultural traditions and our emotional attachments to home. The incorporated objects, rust and text are symbolic of time, change and broader social conditions.
