The HSO String Quartet--Amanda Dykhouse, Katie Bast, Lauren Garza, and Lee Copenhaver--will be performing two masterpieces of the quartet repertoire at a free concert, January 14, 2024, at 3:00pm at First Reformed Church in Holland. The concert will open with Haydn's "Frog" quartet, a light-hearted and joy-filled piece. The concert will conclude with Schubert's "Rosamunde," one of the most beautiful and lyrical quartets of the romantic era.
Haydn's "Frog" Quartet is one of six pieces he composed for the King of Prussia, a music-loving cello player. Its name is derived from the curious opening figure of the finale: a series of quickly repeated notes played by alternating between two different strings, a technique known as bariolage. While the alternating tones have the same pitch, the contrasting timbre of the two different strings (one open, one stopped) makes for a throbbing sonic effect likened a long time ago to a frog croaking.
Schubert was a prolific composer, and is also well known for his Unfinished Symphony, and alas, has several works in his portfolio that remained unfinished. Such is not the case for his Rosamunde Quartet, comprised of four movements. However, this piece is unique in that he incorporated themes from some of his most famous songs, or "lieder", that will be familiar to the audience, as well as a theme from his Unfinished Symphony which is echoed in this piece.
The Free @ 3 Concert Series is held on various Sunday afternoons at 3:00 in the sanctuary of the First Reformed Church in Holland, Michigan. These concerts are open to the public and are free of charge.
