FREE WEEKLY CLASS AT VOLEN CENTER - INDEPENDENT LIVING for the Blind & Visually Impaired
The Florida Outreach Center for the Blind has an Outreach Program that teaches its Independent Living Program every Thursday at the Volen Center in Boca. Just ask for our “VIP” class when you arrive.
Seniors who are losing their vision and unable to travel to our facility in Palm Springs (just north of Lake Worth) can learn alternative techniques of doing everyday tasks and meet with others who are in the same situation.
Our class will increase the abilities of individuals with low vision to care for themselves and greatly reduce the need for costly outside intervention by a visiting nurse or placement in a nursing home.
This class is taught by FOCB instructors who provide solutions for daily problems you come up against when struggling with vision loss. You will be introduced to the latest aids and appliances adapted for people with low vision, and receive tips for:
• Identifying money;
• First aid;
• Paying bills;
• Labeling medications;
• Easy retrieval of clothes and food items;
• Doing laundry;
• Cooking and working safely in the kitchen;
• Cleaning and managing your home;
• Writing letters;
• Reading mail;
• Using the telephone;
• Personal grooming; and
• Basic sewing tasks.
The Florida Outreach Center for the Blind is a nonprofit organization/training facility that is nationally accredited by the Association for Education & Rehabilitation of the Blind & Visually Impaired (AER) and has met all standards set by the AER.
All of our programs are FREE to the blind and visually impaired in FIVE COUNTIES: Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Indian, and Okeechobee Counties. Classes/training are available in English, Spanish, Creole and French. For more information on our center:
