Recognizing the essential role families play in students’ success, ASU Preparatory Academy South Phoenix is honoring sacred family traditions and inviting the community to join in a Día de los Muertos celebration. The free evening of family fun and entertainment will be held at the high school from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 30. A highlight of the celebration will be a special guest appearance by Daniel Suarez, the first Mexican-born NASCAR Cup Series champion. He will welcome attendees at 6:20 p.m. and host a meet and greet at a table for fans of all ages through the rest of the evening. A Mexican-American professional stock car racing driver, Suarez competes full-time in the NASCAR Cup Series. In 2026 he will drive Spire Motorsports’ No. 7 Chevrolet in the NASCAR Cup Series. Open to enrolled families, as well as members of the surrounding community, the Día de los Muertos celebration will also feature thematic activities such as sugar skulls and paper flowers that let young artists express their creativity and a presentation by the Cihuapactli Collective. Live musical performances from mariachi and folklorico dancers will infuse energy into the evening, and other activities including a student project showcase, face painting and prize giveaways will allow participants to immerse themselves in the festivities. Food trucks will be available for families who wish to purchase food and drinks. In addition, interested families will have the opportunity to tour ASU Prep South Phoenix, a tuition-free public charter school offering ongoing enrollment for grades 7-12. Families can explore the college preparatory school, meet staff and experience some of the engaging educational activities that prepare students for success in college and beyond. Community events allow families to gather and consider new options for education. Unique teaching models at ASU Prep support K-12 students based on how they learn best using the latest technologies and layers of personalized instruction and coaching. During campus tours and information sessions, students and parents can explore how the personalized curriculum at ASU Prep empowers K-12 students to work at their own pace while developing critical thinking skills and preparing for college, careers and life.
