About the Bay Area Basket Makers
The Bay Area Basket Makers (BABM) guild was founded 38 years ago to support interest in basketry as a craft and art form. The guild serves as a community resource of information and inspiration with workshops, classes, monthly meetings, and mentorship. Many of our members are highly respected and widely exhibited. As part of the community, BABM is be honored to showcase our members’ work at the Sanchez Art Center.
Exhibition theme: Diversity
Baskets are diverse just by nature of their techniques and materials, whether traditional or contemporary, functional or non-functional. Our members use a wide range of materials from nature including fiber, reed, cane, pine needles, gourds, tree bark, as well as man-made materials such as rope, cotton, tea bags, plastic strapping tape, glass, and found materials. Basketmakers employ a wide diversity of techniques such as coiling, twining, plaiting, wicker work, random weave, knotting, netting, and more. Every culture since the dawn of time has used locally sourced fibrous materials to construct containers for gathering and storing and to create mats, clothing, and ritual objects. Contemporary fiber vessels may not be functional, but as sculpture, they often convey diverse emotions, ideas, and states of mind. BABM members offer you a broad look at this vibrant and diverse craft and artform.
