FILM SCREENING: Out of Chaos, An Artist's Journey in Haiti AUGUST 10
An unexpected art explosion in a Haitian slum, where Black artists living in extreme poverty create amazing art no matter what the circumstances. Many of these artists’ works reside in important museum collections the world over.
An unvarnished yet positive film on Haiti's culture and its indestructible spirit.
Pascal Giacomini, a French-American multidisciplinary artist based in Hollywood, CA is invited to the 2nd Ghetto Biennale of Port-au-Prince to work with a group of Vodou artists to create large-scale sculptures with whatever materials he finds on the ground, like the local artists do.
He documents life in the slum, and undertakes interviews with multiple Haitian artists in his mission to fathom what sustains them despite the daily hardships of life in Port-au-Prince.
Haiti has been called a nation where art is life. The film shows the extraordinary capacity of local artists to upcycle society's rejects into art.
Out of Chaos is an art film made by an artist. Interwoven with photography, local music, the artists' voices, and lots of art. The film delves into Haitian history through the paintings of the island’s celebrated artists; gives viewers an intimate look at a substantial Vodou ceremony; a riotous carnival; and the feverish life of an art community in an unexpected place.
