The Festival of Chariot (traditionally known as Ratha Yatra) starts with hundreds of people pulling a 36 foot tall Chariot in which the ancient deity form of Krishna is placed. This form of Krishna is called Jagannath (the origin of the word juggernaut) and is very unique with big eyes and big smile that will melt your heart.
This 5000 year old tradition originated in India and is now celebrated all over the world since the explosive growth of the Hare Krishna movement since the 1960s. A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami, the Founder-Acarya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), brought this festival to the West, and introduced it to the western world. See links below for the large festivals held at New York, Los Angeles and Chicago.
This Ratha Yatra festival is performed in a mood of love and devotion and invokes auspiciousness for universal peace, harmony, and good will for all of God’s children.
