Deborah Sampson was a poor, ordinary young woman who hoodwinked George Washington’s army! A Massachusetts native, Sampson is the only woman known to have disguised herself as a man and served as a soldier in the Continental Army without getting caught.
Hear stories straight from Sampson. Learn about close calls, mountainous obstacles, and head-scratching conundrums this heroine faced as a farm girl who, without support from family or friends, risked humiliation and imprisonment to help free the colonies from English rule. Gain a behind-the-scenes look at this principled, dangerous deception and the character of the humble rebel who pulled it off. Janet Parnes of Historical Portrayals by Lady J will portray Deborah Sampson.
Following the performance, Town of Marblehead Veterans Service Agent Roseann Trionfi-Mazzuchelli will bridge the past to the present by saying a few words about her service and the role of women in the military today. She is the recipient of the 2021 Deborah Sampson Award, given annually to a Massachusetts woman veteran for outstanding military and community service.
Registration is required to attend in person or via Zoom. Please register at tinyurl.com/Deborah-Sampson. If registering for Zoom, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting online.
